Alice Cooper and Joe Perry on Hollywood Vampires' Drunk History

"How two rock legends teamed with Johnny Depp to create an album that paid tribute to Cooper's old drinking club"
Alice Cooper and Joe Perry have every right to be jaded. Each has sold millions of records and chalked up hits over several decades. But their eyes still light up when they talk about the recent adventure they shared, recording with one of their childhood heroes.

"Paul McCartney just opened up an instrument case and there's his Hofner, left-handed bass, the most famous guitar in the world," Cooper says, grinning. "We were standing around it like Indiana Jones looking at it, like it's got its own light source and our faces are melting over it."

"I asked him a question about it, and he said, 'Here it is. It's OK. Pick it up,'" the Aerosmith guitarist beams. "I actually got a chance to hold it, and it was like the Holy Grail."

"Paul says, 'It's just a piece of wood,' and starts playing it and I said, 'Holy crap!'" Cooper rejoins in his typically confident manner. "To us, that bass a symbol of how we started."

The rockers have been thinking a lot about how they got started in recent years, while they worked on the debut album by Hollywood Vampires, a supergroup they formed with Johnny Depp (yes, that Johnny Depp). Although the record contains two urgent-sounding bloodthirsty originals — three, if you count the intro, in which late horror icon Christopher Lee recites a passage from Dracula — the heart of it is a collection of gritty, hard-edged covers of songs by the trio's peers and inspirations: the Who, Led Zeppelin, the Doors, Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon and more. McCartney happened to stop by Depp's house, where they were recording, to sing a tune he wrote for Badfinger in 1969, "Come and Get It," and the album — out September 11th — also features guest appearances by Joe Walsh, AC/DC's Brian Johnson, Dave Grohl, Slash and Perry Farrell, among many others. What they all have in common is a set of musical roots.

"We were both the same age when we started playing," the 67-year-old, perennially black-clad and surprisingly perky shock-rocker says, gesturing at Perry, who is three years his junior and looks relaxed with a loose, white scarf around his neck. The musicians are sitting on a couch overlooking Manhattan and, though it's the decidedly un-vampiric hour of 9 a.m., both are sprightly and eager to parse just how all the parts of the project fell into place. "We learned the first two Stones albums, the first two Yardbirds albums, the Kinks," the singer continues. "That's how we learned to play and then we invented Alice Cooper and you invented what Aerosmith was going to be from that. Now, when we're doing these songs, it comes pretty easy."

It also came easy for Depp, age 52, who met Cooper in 2011 on the London set of Dark Shadows, the Tim Burton–directed movie in which the actor portrayed (presciently) a vampire and Cooper played another famous fictional villain: himself. When they got to talking, they realized they had more in common than was apparent, namely a love of British Invasion bands and the blues.

The actor was slugging it out as a guitarist in bands well before making his big-screen debut in 1984's A Nightmare on Elm Street. He'd gotten his first instrument at age 12, stole a chord book, dropped out of high school three years later and eventually moved from Florida to L.A. to open for Iggy Pop and the Talking Heads with a poppy new-wave group called the Kids. Video of them playing the Romantics' "What I Like About You" in 1982 exists online. When Cooper got wind that Depp was still playing, he invited him to join him at a gig at London's 100 Club, where they played "I'm Eighteen" and "School's Out."

"He comes in and he plays with us, and he knows everything," Cooper says emphatically. "No matter what people yelled out, he knew it. 'Brown Sugar?' 'Yeah, yeah.' We realized this guy could play." The actor, who was unavailable for this interview, has in the years since become much more active with music, playing gigs with Marilyn Manson, Aerosmith, Patti Smith and, most recently, Gene Simmons. And after jamming with Cooper, he invited the "Feed My Frankenstein" singer over to his house.

"We started saying, 'Let's do an album,'" he continues. "I'd never done a covers record so I said, 'I'd like to do one in honor of all our dead drunk friends, the guys that we used to drink with that are now gone.'" In the early Seventies, Cooper was a member of a loose-knit drinking club called the Hollywood Vampires that would congregate at the Sunset Strip outpost the Rainbow. "It was Harry Nilsson, John Lennon and Keith Moon and a bunch of guys," Cooper says. "I told Johnny, 'They're all dead now. Let's do an homage to them.'"

As it happened, Perry was staying on Depp's estate at the time, working on his memoir, Rocks: My Life In and Out of Aerosmith, which came out last year. "I was staying literally next door to his studio," says the guitarist, who is soft-spoken compared to Cooper. "So when I would finish working on the book, I would just wander over and they would be doing sessions. Johnny said, 'Hey, you wanna be part of this?' I was like, twist my arm, this was so great. I feel like I'm an honorary member because I was the last guy to join."

"Joe would come down and start playing, and I went, 'There's the band, right there,'" Cooper says. "We've got two guitar players that sing, now we need a drummer and a bass player, and then everybody started emerging. We just rocked it."

The original Hollywood Vampires, Cooper's cronies, took up drinking together in the early Seventies, when Cooper was flying high with hits like "School's Out" and "No More Mr. Nice Guy." His drinking buddies over the years included Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison, but at the peak of the Vampires they most included Ringo Starr, the Monkees' Micky Dolenz and songwriter Bernie Taupin, along with Moon, Nilsson and occasionally Lennon. The Rainbow allowed the crew to have their own private loft, which displayed a plaque that proclaimed it "The Lair of the Hollywood Vampires." It listed Cooper, who had a legendary proclivity for imbibing alcohol at the time, as president and Moon as veep.

"The reason we went to the Rainbow every night was to see what Keith was gonna show up as," Cooper says. "He took a lot of time to go out and rent costumes. One day, he shows up and he's in full Queen of England garb." The singer pantomimes Her Royal Highness' grimace and signature dainty wave. "Two weeks later, full-out Hitler, and another night he's fully in drag as a French maid," Cooper recalls. "You're going, 'Wow, this is just another day in his life.'

"He'd wear you out," the singer continues. "If he came to your house and stayed, that week was like, 'Holy crap, I need a vacation,' because he was so intense. He'd stay at my house for two weeks, then he'd go to Harry's for two weeks and then Ringo's for two weeks. Those two weeks would be Hellzapoppin'. But he was also the coolest and funniest guy."

As for the other core members of the club, Dolenz lived next door to Cooper and was also one of the singer's golf buddies, and Taupin was the vocalist's best friend, so they would see each other almost every night. The two Beatles weren't as regular as the others, but attended frequently enough to be members, as did Nilsson. The way to join to the group, as Cooper has bragged, was to out-drink the other members. He explains, that's when he would see what kind of drunks his friends were.

"Everybody's personality changes a little bit when they drink," he says. "I was always the Dean Martin guy; I had the golden buzz, always laughing. I was never the depressed drunk. John and Harry, they would drink, and they could get after each other. If one guy said black, the other guy said white. If one guy said Democrat, the other said Republican. Pretty soon, I'm standing between them going, 'Guys, sit down.' They were the best of friends, but when they drank, they liked to get political and talk about religion and everything else that causes fights. It was funny because neither one was a fighter; they just had a belligerent streak in them every once in a while. Most of the time they were laughing."

Cooper recalls the Hollywood Vampires as having a clubhouse vibe, where only very rarely did these famous musicians talk about music. "We were in music all the time, so if you weren't making an album, you were touring," he says. "If you weren't touring, you were doing something else. So to have a night off from that, the last thing you wanted to talk about was music. You talked about cars and other people."

Photos from one gathering of the Hollywood Vampires, which took place at an Anne Murray concert in November 1973, picture Lennon, Nilsson, Cooper and Dolenz smiling like they were having the times of their lives. Today, the latter two in the photo are the last Vampires standing.

Facing the Music

Rock stars and music-industry execs once ruled the earth, but now -- in terms of size and profit margins -- the music industry is becoming the book business (minus the literacy).
Hemingway had rock-star status (and even impersonators). Steinbeck was Springsteen. Salinger was Kurt Cobain. Dorothy Parker was Courtney Love. James Jones was David Crosby. Mailer was Eminem. This is to say -- and I understand how hard this is to appreciate -- that novelists were iconic for much of the first half of the last century. They set the cultural agenda. They made lots of money. They lived large (and self-medicated). They were the generational voice. For a long time, anybody with any creative ambition wanted to write the Great American Novel.

But starting in the fifties, and then gaining incredible force in the sixties, rock-and-roll performers eclipsed authors as cultural stars. Rock and roll took over fiction's job as the chronicler and romanticizer of American life (that rock and roll became much bigger than fiction relates, I'd argue, more to scalability and distribution than to relative influence), and the music business replaced the book business as the engine of popularculture.

Now, though, another reversal, of similar commercial and metaphysical magnitude, is taking place. Not, of course, that the book business is becoming rock and roll, but that the music industry is becoming, in size andprofit margins and stature, the book business.

In other words, there'll still be big hits (Celine Dion is Stephen King), but even if you're fairly high up on the music-business ladder, most of your time, which you'd previously spent with megastars, will be spent with mid-list stuff. Where before you'd be happy only at gold and platinum levels, soon you'll be grateful if you have a release that sells 30,000 or 40,000 units -- that will be your bread and butter. You'll sweat every sale and dollar. Other aspects of the business will also contract -- most of the perks and largesse and extravagance will dry up completely. The glamour, the influence, the youth, the hipness, the hookers, the drugs -- gone. Instead, it will be a low-margin, consolidated, quaintly anachronistic business, catering to an aging clientele, without much impact on an otherwise thriving culture awash in music that only incidentally will come from the music industry.

This glum (if also quite funny) fate is surely the result of compounded management errors -- the know-nothingness and foolishness and acting-out that, for instance, just recently resulted in what seems to be the final death of Napster.

But it's way larger, too. Management solutions in the music business have, rightly, given way to a pure, no-exit kind of fatalism.

It's all pain. It's all breakdown. Music-business people, heretofore among the most self-satisfied and self-absorbed people of the age, are suddenly interesting, informed, even ennobled, as they become fully engaged in the subject of their own demise. Producers, musicians, marketing people, agents. . . they'll talk you through what's happened to their business -- it's part B-school case study and part Pilgrim's Progress.

Start with radio.

Radio and rock and roll have had the most remarkable symbiotic relationship in media -- the synergy that everybody has tried to re-create in media conglomerates. Radio got free content; music labels got free promotion.

Radio's almost effortless cash flow, and mom-and-pop organization (there were once 5,133 owners of U.S. radio stations), made it ripe for consolidation, which began in the mid-eighties and was mostly completed as soon as Congress removed virtually all ownership limits in 1996. A handful of companies now control nearly the entirety of U.S. radio, with Clear Channel and its more than 1,200 stations being the undisputed Death Star. (Clear Channel is also one of the nation's major live promoters, and uses its airtime leverage to force performers to use its concert services, as Britney Spears and others have charged.)

Radio, heretofore ad hoc and eccentric and local, underwent a transformation in which it became formatted, rational, and centralized. Its single imperative was to keep people from moving the dial -- seamlessness became the science of radio.

The music business suddenly had to start producing music according to very stringent (if unwritten) commercial guidelines (it could have objected or rebelled -- but it rolled over instead; what's more, in a complicated middleman strategy of music brokers and independent promoters, labels have, in effect, been forced to pay to have their boring music aired). Format became law. Everything had to sound the way it was supposed to sound. Fungibility was king. Familiarity was the greatest virtue.
Once Sheryl Crow was an established hit, the music business was compelled to offer up an endless number of Sheryl Crow imitators. Then when the Sheryl Crow imitators became a reliable radio genre, Sheryl Crow was compelled to imitate them. (Entertainment Weekly, without irony, recently praised the new Moby album for sounding like his last.)

But then, just as radio playlists become closely regulated, the Internet appears.

"Suddenly there was another distribution avenue offering far greater product range," notes my friend Bob Thiele, who's been producing, writing, performing, and doing A&R work in L.A. for twenty years (and whose father was Buddy Holly's producer), and who, in my memory, never before talked about avenues of distribution. "And then, before anyone was quite aware of what was happening, file-sharing replaced radio as the engine of music culture."

It wasn't just that it was free music -- radio offered free music. But whatever you wanted was free (whenever you wanted it). The Internet is music consumerism run amok, resulting not only in billions of dollars of lost sales but in an endless bifurcation of taste. The universe fragmented into sub-universes, and then sub-sub-universes. The music industry, which depends on large numbers of people with similar interests for its profit margins, now had to deal with an ever-growing numbers of fans with increasingly diverse and eccentric interests.

It is hard to think of a more profound business crisis. You've lost control of the means of distribution, promotion, and manufacturing. You've lost quality control -- in some sense, there's been a quality-control coup. You've lost your basic business model -- what you sell has become as free as oxygen.
It's a philosophical as well as a business crisis -- which compounds the problem, because the people who run the music business are not exactly philosophers.

"They're thugs," says a former high-ranking music exec of my acquaintance, who is no shrinking violet himself.

Such thuggishness, when the business was about courting difficult acts, enforcing contracts, procuring drugs, paying off everyone who needed to be paid off, may once have been a key management advantage. But it probably isn't the main virtue you're looking for when you're in a state of existential crisis. Being street-smart is not being smart.
In a situation of such vast uncertainty, with the breakdown of all prior business and cultural assumptions, you don't necessarily want to have to depend upon, say, Tommy Mottola to create a new paradigm.

For a long while, the management response at the major labels had a weird combination of denial and foot stamping: putting Napster out of business-then sort-of/sort-of-not buying Napster -- all the while being told by everybody who knows anything about technology that, no matter what the music industry does, or who it sues, music will be, inevitably, free. Duh. There is, too, a management critique -- perhaps most succinctly put by Don Henley in his now-famous post-Grammy letter wherein he quoted Mel Brooks in Blazing Saddles: "Gentlemen, gentlemen! We've got to protect our phony baloney jobs!" -- that sees record labels as generally engaged in the usual practice of ripping off anyone who can be ripped off while remaining oblivious to the fact that Rome is burning.
But for the most part, denial, and even the reflex to just keep squeezing the last dollar until there is nothing left to squeeze, is passing (labels have even recently awoken to the problems of dealing with the radio behemoths and are frantically, and way too late, trying to find reasons to sue the radio guys and gain back a little leverage).

I had a very nice sushi lunch in the Sony dining room the other day where I heard about the generally gallows mood at Sony Music. The recent past was very bad; the future was likely to be worse. All money earned from here on in would be harder to earn. This felt like acceptance to me: We simply don't know what to do.

The truth is, there might not be anything much to do.

Here are the choices:

If you're providing free entertainment, which is obviously what the music business is doing, then you have to figure out some way to sell advertising to the people who are paying attention to your free music. But nobody seems to have any idea how that might be done. Or you can provide stuff that's free, and use the free stuff to promote something else of more value that people, you hope, will buy -- now called the "legitimate alternative." (Putting video on the CD is one of those ideas -- though, of course, you can file-share video too.) Or sell the CD at a level that makes it cheap enough to compete with free (free, after all, has its own costs for the consumer).

It's a spreadsheet solution. There will continue to be a market for selling music, however diminished -- but it will have to be cheaper music. Margins will shrink even more. Accordingly, costs will have to shrink. Spending a few million to launch an act will shortly be a thing of the past. (The formal catalyst of the beginning of the end of big development costs may be the Wall Street Journal's story a few months ago that precisely accounted for the $2.2 million launch costs of a singer named Carly Hennessy, who went on to sell 378 CDs.) A&R guys making half a million are also history (in the future, they'll start at $40,000 and max out at $150,000). And no more parties.

And then there is the CD theory. This theory is widely accepted -- with great pride, in fact -- in the music industry. It represents the ultimate music-biz hustle. But its implications are seldom played out.
The CD theory holds that the music business actually died about twenty years ago. It was revived without anyone knowing it had actually died because compact-disc technology came along and everybody had to replace what they'd bought for the twenty years prior to the advent of the CD.
The music business, this theory acknowledges, is about selling technology as much as music. From mono to stereo to Walkman. It just happens that the next stage of technological development in the music business has largely excluded the music business itself.

The further implication, though, might be the more interesting and painful one: You can't depend on just the music.

Rock and roll is just an anomaly. While for a generation or two it created a go-go industry -- the youthquake -- it is unreasonable to expect that anything so transforming can remain a permanent condition. To a large degree, the music industry is, then, a fluke. A bubble. Finally the bubble burst.
But not with a pop. It's an almost imperceptible, but highly meaningful, alteration in context. Alanis Morissette becomes Grace Paley. Bono becomes John Hersey. Fiona Apple is Joyce Carol Oates. Moby is Martin Amis.

This is not so bad.

And best of all, our children -- all right, our grandchildren -- won't want to become rock stars.

Liverpool's Beatle History

Liverpool and London serve as geographical bookends to the story of the Beatles; a story that encompasses rock n' roll's most important years and still enthralls fans the world over. Any visit to Liverpool would be incomplete without a visit to at least a few of the haunts that shaped the most popular rock band of all time.

The Cavern Club This legendary club where manager Brian Epstein discovered the Beatles no longer exists, having been demolished to make way for the Merseyrail underground in 1973, but the new club was built with the original bricks. It sits firmly in the Beatles' shadow and is a must-see for any true fan. Take in some great live music, look over the Wall of Fame, and touch a piece of music history.

The neighborhood surrounding the club is also a thriving shopping district where Beatle-themed merchandise and entertainment abound.

Magical Mystery Tour Liverpool is full of sites that shaped and inspired the early lives of the "fab four".See the actual locations that inspired song titles and lyrics. See the places where life events inspired the music that's captured the world's imagination.

One of the best ways to go about this is to schedule a guided bus tour. Magical Mystery Tour is one such tour and takes visitors to sites like Strawberry Field, Penny Lane, and St. Peter's Church in Woolton where John Lennon and Paul McCartney first met. This particular tour tells the Beatles story in a vivid and entertaining way with plenty of music sprinkled in along the way.

The tour originates in close proximity to several good Hotels in Liverpool and is a good way to prevent the frustration that can come with running all over town with a map.

Some fans, however, may choose to take the sights in at their own pace, and this can be a great way for the truly devoted to take their time and get a good feel for these places and neighborhoods.

Of particular interest is John Lennon's childhood home on Menlove Avenue. Lennon's widow Yoko Ono recently purchased and renovated the house, restoring it to it's 1950s styling. Ono donated it to the National Trust and it's now open to the public.

Liverpool hotels and the hospitality in Liverpool generally is particularly accomodating to Beatles fans. Visitors will find that they're both encouraged and welcomed in this rock music Mecca.

Christian Music - Soothe Your Mind, Body And Soul

The Christian Music has certainly had developments ever since it has been spread out of the Christian church. Originally, these types of music are actually played with the use of the musical instruments during regular church occasions. Eventually, the faithful musicians integrate the lyrics and the vocals into the hymns. Eventually, the contemporary forms of Christian music were born. It's been actually five long decades ever since these types of music have been delivered into the ears of the public society. The pioneers of these types of music are actually questioned with their sincerity of purposes.

Are they only using the name of God to sell their music and gain a lot of money?

Much to the dismay of critics, it was the other way around. They are using their gift and capability in music to spread the name of God to the masses. After all, music has a way of touching hearts all over the world.Just like the ordinary and the modern types of music that we listen to today, the Christian music has also been divided in to different classifications: Hip-Hop, Gospel, Rock, Soft Rock, Pop and Country. The modern types like the pop music and country formats are the very first ones to be used. The music was then referred during the 1960's as the Jesus music due to its inclination with religious values.

In the 1990's music of Christianity has grown popular and loved by the public. Presently, a wide selection of various beats is available to suit the different listening preference of the audience. Hip-hop, rock and soft rock for those who like upbeat and energetic numbers. Pop and country Christian music are for those who like easy and light listening. Gospels are those that are primarily focused to fill the listener's soul with overwhelming insights and message of God.Today, spreading and indulging the grace of the Lord with the help of country music could be easily done by simply turning on your mp3 player or your iPod. Artists and bands to choose from are in abundance. Among a few of them are Daniel Ray, Lady Dameron, Phillip Paris, Randy Travis, The Statler Borthers, Jade Sholty, Glen Campbell, and so much more. Music has certainly one way of expressing the feelings and emotions that we cannot vent out with verbal expressions. That is why, next time you feel the need to soothe your ears, try to soothe your heart and soul as well with the help of country Christian music.

Hip House and the Hip Hop Jives

The first element that livens up any party-evening is the pop-rap music and the beats to which you dance. A party without music is almost close to impossible but not just any music will work to make your get together a hit!
You need the right hip hop music to make your world rock and to get your people on the floor.  Initially it started with House music.

House music became popular in the early 1980’s; around the same time when early hip hop was emerging. The discos began to play-it-on in the Latin and African American communities. Since things with universal appeal don’t often take time to travel, the genre also spread widely reaching Europe very soon from Chicago, where it started. There has been much debate on how the name " House" came into existence… some believe it was the "warehouse" effect since they played it hard and often or because the artists made the music on their own, in their homes; but there is no certain answer.

It is few years down the line that this music merged with our popular themes to make the Hip-house music. These are the songs to which we dance and it is quite a favorite among the youth even today. Possibly one of the most interesting cultural mixes can be noted in its emergence as the very first song of this genre was recorded by Beat Masters Productions (U.K.) and Cookie Crew called "Rock da house". (The video is available by the name Beat Master & Cookie Crew - Rock da House on you-tube). However, the journey hasn’t been that simple; nor for the artists nor the genre. The makers of the firs recorded song ever faced the challenge when Tyree Cooper prompted "Turn up the Bass", 1989, as the first mix-genre record. There were many such stories for the claim-to-fame; demanding the premier position. On the other hand there were critiques who didn’t acknowledge the very form as music! They went on to label it as "just another disco theme"; much to the disappointment of the ardent fans.

Though logically speaking hip house is too contemporary to be dismissed easily. What began as ware-house hip hop music has made a very comfortable transition to club music with rap rock beats that will get you on the floor – moving, shouting and cheering. From the soul and funk roots that were the inspirations what we have today is electro house crossovers; with bass line pulses and electric drums. Try listening; the reverberation has almost touched your feet!

5 Basic Types of Music

Music is a form of art that people love and get inspiration from. Music makes us feel livelier and more inspired to do our everyday tasks. We often listen to music when we get bored, we are doing paper works or we are just hanging out with friends. The type of music we listen to usually depends on our personality. Some of love the energy rock or hip hop music gives us while others would prefer listening to mellow, quiet music or love songs. There are many types of music and to name a few are: pop music, country music, hip hop music, techno music and instrumental.

These types of music are mostly known to us and we sometimes love to listen to different types of music depending on the mood we are in. Pop music is derived from the word "popular" and pop music is usually loved by younger generation.

This type of music can be in different forms love song, classical, rock or novelty song. You can identify if it's pop music if it is the current trend or if it is well-loved by teenagers. When we hear the word country music, what usually enter our minds are artists like the Carpenters or Bob Dylan. Country music is said to have started in the southern part of United States in 1960s. On the other hand, Hip hop music was popularized by African Americans in New York in 1970s. Hip hop music are usually identified and linked to rap, beatboxing and many others.

Techno Music is a modern type of music that is a combination of electronic and dance music but it is mainly instrumental. This type of music was originally created as a form of party music and can be heard in disco bars. Another type of music that is loved by many of us especially those who love to be in a quiet environment is the Instrumental music.

This type of music is played using different kinds of instruments and there is no singer to render a song. Whatever type of music we love to hear, the important thing is that we are inspired by the songs we hear and if you are musically-inclined you can even create your own musical piece and share it to other people.

Tips to Get You Invited to the Rock Concert After Party

I want to start off by clarifying that when I say "rock concert" I am talking about small shows featuring independent local and touring bands. The kind of shows you would see in a bar or a club. If you are going to an arena show your after party is getting stuck in traffic, so have fun with that. Your goal here is party and get friendly with real rock stars and it's at the more intimate settings that it's going to happen. So you find your show and the band takes the stage. Now it's time to let loose and have some fun. Hoot and holler, dance, clap and shout encouraging words between songs. "You guys rock!" etc.

The wilder the crowd gets the better time the musicians will have. When you introduce yourself after the set, the band will remember you as someone who really went off and take an instant liking to you. When the band is done performing, they will have two things on their mind. Getting laid and getting intoxicated. If you are an attractive and easy going person then offering sex may get you invited. If you're a slob like me, you might want to try booze. Offer to buy a round of beers. Be prepared and say "Hey guys, I got a hooker boat (18 pack) in my car. Where's the party?" Some musicians may be looking for drugs. I speak from experience when I say drugs are very dangerous and you don't want to get involved with them at all. Don't bust out an eight ball or someone could end up dead or institutionalized.Always be friendly after a show and thank the band personally. A quick way to find the after party is to just ask. It may be at a bar down the street that serves stiffer and cheaper drinks. If this is the case just follow the crowd.

Not every band has the ability to have a house party after a show. If you have a well stocked and empty house you could always offer to host the after party at your pad. Just make sure the neighbors are cool because it could get loud and rowdy. Also put the fragile stuff away because your place might get trashed! If your house is big enough you might even be able to talk your new musician friends into playing a house show. This last tip is what got me invited to all the after parties.
If you got the equipment, videotape the whole show. Musicians are self conscience and they are gonna want to know if they killed it onstage or totally sucked. Bring your cords and let them know you can plug into their TV and let them watch the whole show. You will be a hero and instant friend.Use these tips and you will be partying with rock stars in no time. Some of the friendships you make could even turn into business partnerships if you have any interest in show biz. I had the time of my life and I bet you will too.

How Rock And Roll Started

music has had a long, winding and story filled history and has been written by numerous musical artists on a journey into many different offshoots and genres evolving into a wide range of subcategories we here in our time.

There definitely has been a pile of arguments as to where the original term rock and roll was first used but one thing is the fact, the term rock and roll was a euphemism used by blacks for sex! This slang term was definitely in use in the early 1900s and we have a record done in 1922 by Trixie Smith entitled My Man Rocks Me With One Steady Roll. Many of the blacks in the 1940s and 1950s got quite a kick out of the slang term being used on white radio stations without the conservative audiences of the day with the conservative audiences of the day not fully understanding what the phrase referred to.

Rock & Roll became a real force by the mid-50s when Elvis Presley began to play a version of music that became known as Rockabilly which combined rock and roll music with his country and western background. Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins were two other musicians who performed rockabilly while black performers who appeared like Fats Domino and Little Richard played a different type of rock and roll music that was highly influenced by black rhythm and blues. Even Johnny Cash was a rockabilly performer with his song Folsom Prison Blues back in 1956. But no matter how you want say how it started, rock and roll was a style of music here to stay. There was a bit of a lull in rock and roll music into the early 60s but British bands were covering many American rock and roll music hits along with all of the rhythm and blues records they could get their hands on and before long the Beatles and the British invasion swamped America bringing with it a resurgence of rock and roll music.

Rock & roll music has had an amazing cultural impact throughout the world. Everything from hairstyles, clothing styles and fashion, attitudes and lifestyles and patterns of speech and language have all been influenced in some way by the varied iterations of rock and roll music. Rock n roll also created a very large number of stars and superstars who sold millions upon millions of records, CDs, MP3s and musical downloads.

Rock & roll music came from various influences like early blues, country music, rhythm and blues as well as black folk music and has in turn created spinoffs such as folk rock, progressive rock, glam rock, psychedelic rock, alternative rock, punk music, surf music and heavy metal.

How To Write Good Lyrics

If a song has to capture the world and be a chart topper, it is almost certain that it needs good lyrics. It's all taste as one persons genius can be another person's tosser.

People get themselves drawn to lyrics. The lyrics don't even need to be very profound. Just as good lyrics can take a song to amazing heights a bad lyric can destroy a good song. The worst case is when the writer really wants to be clever and articulate, but just can't cut it.

Try to Write Everyday You can write it on a notebook, napkin, piece of paper or almost anything that you can get your hands to. If you write everyday, your lyrics will have a more natural flow to them due to regular practice. You might end up liking something you wrote at a later stage, so don't throw the paper away.

Read! Its simple, if you don't read, how will you get the inspiration to write yourself? Magazines, internet, newspapers etc are some of the various options available to you even if you don't want to read long boring books. Reading is important to make your brain learn and gather constantly. Reading pays off, as the better the reader, the better the writer.

Topic Keep a topic in mind that means a great deal to you, like an actual event that may have happened to you or someone close to you. Emotions help the words come out of the little trap in your brain. An inspiration can also be used to think of a topic.

Organize Collect all of the really nice quotes or sentences that you liked, when the time comes for you to finally sit down and gather up all of the passages you have written. The one that stands out the most to you should be the center of your attention. Try to tweak it a little bit if it sounds too poetry-like and doesn't have the song essence, using the same format and similar words.

Keep going! Never stop there. When you have the main topic the rest of the lyrics should come easily since you know exactly what your topic is. Try the whole procedure again if you are still stuck, or maybe choose a different topic. It's okay if the first one isn't perfect. It usually never is. When you really try hard, you may be on the verge of being as good or better than the people whom you admire when it comes to their seemingly magical skill of writing perfect lyrics that just resonate in your mind.

Know your emotion. It's hard to write music sometimes, because people feel so much and you can't exactly say what it is that you're feeling. Perhaps if you want to write about a specific topic, you'll know your opinion on that a lot more than if you were to try to write lyrics about the way you feel about everything. It's just too hard to do that and usually listeners will get even more confused than you are.

In summation, lyrics are the part fans look to the most for meaning and inspiration, and thus are the most part of any song. Lyrics are usually the ones most revered long past their prime, so it is important that they focus on this part of a song!

Blues Piano Sheet Music Help You To Master It

Do you want to play blues piano?

Sheet music can be hard to discover. This website has sourced the top publications and shows blues piano beginners how to begin.

Let blues piano sheet music be your basisLike rhythms, harmonies, themes and timbres, melody is among the pillars for a musical -˜sound,' and blues pianists are skillful in it. Virtually any piece of blues piano sheet music found on the internet will have a melodic ingredient, even when it's not the primary focal point of the song. To perfect melodies, you'll should try to learn your scales and harmonies, and you'll need to understand the unique conventions that define in what way piano sheet music may liberate yourself to convey your own blues.

Initially, you'll need to find out which notes are best suited to play in your blues music. This specific assortment of suitable tones is named the scale. Let's take a look at an example looking at the free blues sheet music listed below:

  This is actually a very simple blues scale in the key of F, and it is referred to as F - A flat - B flat - B - C - E flat - F.

The symbolic representation before B within the sheet, the 4th tone, is termed a natural, and it is useful to -œundo- the flat set up with the note which comes after it.

If you play this up and down on your own piano, you'll hear that jazzy sound which makes it not hard to recognize blues piano when you hear this. The cause of this is actually the structure in relationships amongst the pitches - they're unique, in some vital ways, from what you find in classical, or electronic or world music.

Some of these are known as blue notes, and they're common in blues piano sheet music, but few other music styles. These notes are a trademark of the blues in terms of how they are used to create contrast as well as tension within the melody and the harmony. They're usually just somewhat out of tune, and are generally commonly played with musical instruments capable of bending pitches, examples of which are acoustic guitar or singing. Intense, rather detuned pitches such as these work against the musical cleanliness of your blues piano, and the result is that gritty, coarse edginess which makes blues tunes that expressive.

For your homework, consider depending the actual keys that sit between these tones, and work to design some other blues scales starting on other notes. And enjoy yourself!

Traditional Ethiopian Music and Ethiopian Culture

Ethiopia has a very rich and diverse music history. The various tribes and ethnic groups of Ethiopia have their own distinct music culture and tradition.

The Tigrayans to the north have this smooth, circular dance routine culminated with shoulder and neck movement. The Amharas at the center have dance style dominated by upper body and neck movement. The Oromos to the center and south have this jumping style and full body dance routine. The Gurages have an acrobatic dance that requires high level of arm, leg and body coordination.

Traditional Ethiopian music instruments include the masingo, a one-stringed violin like instrument that is played with a bow; the krar, a six-stringed lyre, played with fingers or a plectrum; the washint, a flute made from bamboo; and various drums. There are three types of drums that are used in different occasions: the negarit (kettledrum), played with sticks, the kebero, played with hands, and the atamo, tapped with the fingers or palm. Other instruments include the begena, a huge, multi-stringed lyre often referred to as the Harp of David; the tsinatsil or sistrum, which is used in churches; the meleket, a long trumpet without fingerholes, and the embilta, a large, one-note flute used on ceremonial occasions.

In addition to the above traditional music instruments, Ethiopian music also includes various types of modern music instruments that are used by bands playing Ethiopian jazz, pop, and the like. Modern Ethiopian music instruments include the guitar, percussion, violin, saxophone, mandolin, clarinet, accordion, etc.

The masinqo is one of the most popular traditional Ethiopian music instruments used throughout Ethiopia. It is one of the fixtures in Ethiopian culture. Although it looks simple, the masinqo can, in the hands of an expert musician, produces a wide variety of melodies. It is often played by wandering minstrels as well as professional musicians, particularly at eating houses and local bars called "Bunna Bet" or "Azmari Bet". The word Azmari is derived from the Geez word Zemmari, which means "one who sings".
Today, the concept mainly applies to establishments where professional masinqo players and the female singers that accompany them play.

When it comes to Azmari performances, lyrics can be largely improvised or sung with the art of double meaning called Kinie or Semmna Werq (meaning, the literal and the hidden messages). The audience is not supposed to take the lyrics literally - they are challenged to listen carefully to get the "golden" sense. The Azmaris may praise individuals in the audience through their songs to uplift their mood. This favor in Ethiopian culture is usually responded in kind by awarding the performer cash - by pasting a bill on the forehead, or stashing it in the performer's shirt.

Azmaris also accept verses thrown at them by members of the audience and skillfully incorporate them into their music. In traditional Ethiopian music and Ethiopian culture, the skill at improvisation by the Azmari is as important as his/her vocal performance, or his/her skill at playing the masinqo. With such improvised lyrics, one may appreciate, denounce, advice, teach, entertain, and much more.

In recent years, Azmari Ethiopian music performances have even spread to other parts of the world outside Ethiopia. One can find "Azmari Betoch" in some parts of Europe and North America where there are significant pockets of Ethiopian immigrants residing, including in cities such as Washington DC and Los Angeles in the USA, and London in UK. Although these establishments are not exactly the traditional Ethiopian "Azmari Bet" variety, they offer many of the services their counterparts in Ethiopia provide, including music using the masinqo.

The History Of Hip Hop Part III

Though West Coast artists eclipsed those from New York, some East Coast rappers achieved success. New York became dominated in terms of sales by Puff Daddy (No Way Out), Mase (Harlem World) and other Bad Boy Records artists, in spite of some criticism for a perceived over-reliance on sampling and a general watered-down sound, aimed directly at pop markets. Other New York based artists continued with a harder edged sound, achieving only limited popular success.

Nas (Illmatic), and The Wu-Tang Clan (Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)), for example, received excellent reviews but generally mediocre or sporadic sales.

Jovanotti

The sales rivalry between the East Coast and the West Coast eventually turned into a personal rivalry, aided in part by the music media. Many reporters were not aware that MC battles were an integral part of hip hop since its inception, and that, generally, little was meant by open taunts on albums and in performances.

In the wake of declining sales following the deaths of both superstar artists, the sounds of hip hop were greatly diversified. Most important was the rise of Southern rap, starting with OutKast (ATLiens) and Goodie Mob (Soul Food), based out of Atlanta. Later, Master P (Ghetto D) built up an impressive roster of popular artists (the No Limit posse) based out of New Orleans and incorporating G funk and Miami bass influences, and distinctive regional sounds from St. Louis, Chicago, Washington D.C., Detroit and others began to gain some popularity. Also in the 1990s, rapcore (a fusion of hip hop and heavy metal) became popular among mainstream audiences. Rage Against the Machine, Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit were among the most popular rapcore bands.

Though Caucasian rappers like the Beastie Boys (Paul's Boutique), Vanilla Ice (To the Extreme) and 3rd Bass (The Cactus Album) had had some popular success and/or critical acceptance from the hip hop community, Eminem's success, beginning in 1999 with the triple platinum The Slim Shady LP, came as a surprise to many. Like most successful hip hop artists of the time, Eminem came to be criticized for alleged glorification of violence, misogyny, and drug abuse, as well as homophobia and albums laced with constant profanity. According to Kanye West, "Everybody in hip-hop discriminates against gay people."

In South Africa, pioneering crew Black Noise began rapping in 1989, provoking a ban by the apartheid-era government, which lasted until 1993. Later, the country produced its own distinctive style in the house fusion kwaito. Elsewhere in Africa, Senegalese mbalax fusions continued to grow in popularity, while Tanzanian Bongo Flava crews like X-Plastaz combined hiphop with taarab, filmi and other styles.

In Europe, hip hop was the domain of both ethnic nationals and immigrants. Germany, for example, produced the well-known Die Fantastischen Vier as well as several Turkish performers like the controversial Cartel, Kool Savaş, and Eko Fresh. Similarly, France has produced a number of native-born stars, such as IAM and the Breton crew Manau, though the most famous French rapper is probably the Senegalese-born MC Solaar. The Netherlands' most famous rappers are The Osdorp Posse, an all-white crew from Amsterdam, and The Postmen, from Cape Verde and Suriname. Italy found its own rappers, including Jovanotti and Articolo 31, grow nationally renowned, while the Polish scene began in earnest early in the decade with the rise of PM Cool Lee. In Romania, B.U.G. Mafia came out of Bucharest's Pantelimon neighborhood, and their brand of gangsta rap underlines the parallels between life in Romania's Communist-era apartment blocks and in the housing projects of America's ghettos. Israel's hip hop grew greatly in popularity at the end of the decade, with several stars emerging from both sides of the Palestinian (Tamer Nafer) and Jewish (Subliminal) divide; though some, like Mook E, preached peace and tolerance, others expressed nationalist and violent sentiments.

In Asia, mainstream stars rose to prominence in the Philippines, led by Michael V, Rap Asia, MC Lara and Lady Diane, and in Japan, where underground rappers had previously found a limited audience, and popular teen idols brought a style called J-rap to the top of the charts in the middle of the 90s.

Latinos had played an integral role in the early development of hip hop, and the style had spread to parts of Latin America, such as Cuba, early in its history. In Mexico, popular hip hop began with the success of Calo in the early '90s. Later in the decade, with Latin rap groups like Cypress Hill on the American charts, Mexican rap rock groups, such as Control Machete, rose to prominence in their native land. An annual Cuban hip hop concert held at Alamar in Havana helped to popularize Cuban hip hop, beginning in 1995. Hip hop grew steadily more popular in Cuba, due to official governmental support for musicians.

Though mainstream acceptance has become fairly limited to so-called commercial acts, some alternative hip hop musicians, with a socially aware or positive or optimistic tone, have achieved moderate mainstream success. De La Soul's Three Feet High and Rising, Gang Starr's No More Mr. Nice Guy and the Jungle Brothers' Straight Out the Jungle are usually considered the first albums in this genre, with jazz-based samples and lyrics (see jazz rap) purportedly influenced by the Afrocentric messages of Bambaataa's Zulu Nation collective. Later alternative artists like A Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def, and The Roots, also achieved some mainstream success, though the influence of jazz had grown less pronounced (with some exceptions, such as Guru's Jazzmatazz project).

Jazz rap went on to influence the development of trip hop in the United Kingdom, which fuses hip hop, jazz and electronic music; believed to have been started by Massive Attack's Blue Lines (1991). Arrested Development also released their album 3 Years, 5 Months & 2 Days in the Life Of... in 1992, which included the hit single, "Tennessee." At the time, it was one of the best selling and most popular alternative rap albums. The success of Dr. Dre's The Chronic later that year, however, showed gangsta rap to be a more commercially viable form of hip hop.

In the year 2000, The Marshall Mathers LP by Eminem sold over ten million copies in the United States, and Nelly's debut LP, Country Grammar, sold over six million copies. The United States also saw the success of alternative hip hop in the form of moderately popular performers like The Roots, Dilated Peoples and Mos Def, who achieved unheard-of success for their field.

As the decade progressed, hip hop has transformed from the more or less "old school" rhythmic rap to a more melodic hip hop that has the elements of jazz, classical, pop, reggae, and many other genres. Hip hop also gave birth to sub-genres such as snap music and crunk. Hip hop influences also found their way into mainstream pop during this period as well.

Some countries, like Tanzania, maintained popular acts of their own in the early 2000s, though many others produced few homegrown stars, instead following American trends. Scandinavian, especially Danish and Swedish, performers became well known outside of their country, while hip hop continued its spread into new regions, including Russia Hip-Hop, Japan Hip Hop, Philippines Hip Hop, Canada Hip Hop, China Hip Hop, Korea Hip Hop and India Hip Hop.

In Germany and France, gangsta rap has become popular among youths who like the violent and aggressive lyrics. Some German rappers openly or comically flirt with Nazism, Bushido (born Anis Mohamed Youssef Ferchichi) raps "Salutiert, steht stramm, Ich bin der Leader wie A" (Salute, stand to attention, I am the leader like 'A') and Fler had a hit with the record Neue Deutsche Welle (New German Wave) complete with the title written in ThirdThe  Reich style gothic print and advertised with an Adolf Hitler quote. These references also spawned great controversy in Germany.

By the beginning of the twenty-first century, sales of hip-hop music in the United States began to severely wane, leading Time magazine to question if mainstream hip-hop was "dying." Billboard Magazine found that, since 2000, rap sales dropped 44%,and declined to 10% of all music sales, which, while still a commanding figure when compared to other genres, is a significant drop from the 13% of all music sales where rap music regularly placed. NPR culture critic Elizabeth Blair noted that, "some industry experts say young people are fed up with the violence, degrading imagery and lyrics. Others say the music is just as popular as it ever was, but that fans have found other means to consume the music."
